These prompts can be used for in-class discussion, exploratory free-writing, or reflection homework before or after reading the novel.

Personal Response Prompt

In Wonder, we see that everyone is fighting their own battle and needs kindness. Not only Auggie, but other characters like Via, Miranda, Justin, and Jack, experience struggles. What do these characters struggle with? How might those characters be judged if you didn’t know more about them?

Teaching Suggestion: Start by writing down each minor character listed above on the board. After students think about these characters, ask them to reflect on their own lives. Set a timer for 10 minutes and have them write a letter or journal about something they have gone through or someone they know who has gone through something difficult that others didn’t notice.

Post-Reading Analysis

In Wonder, Auggie is picked on or bullied in ways that are sometimes obvious and sometimes subtle. What are some examples of each? How do both types of bullying impact him?

Teaching Suggestion: Either print out a graphic organizer with two columns or simply have students draw a line on a sheet of paper to split it in half. In pairs or table groups, have the students spend a few minutes sorting through the book to find examples of bullying/picking on Auggie.
