Character Analysis

Stella Alonso

Stella is a 26-year-old fashion influencer with green eyes, olive skin, and brunette curls. In Twisted Hate, she becomes more frazzled as time goes by, and it is revealed in Twisted Lies that this is due to the extreme pressure put on her by her boss, Meredith, at DC Style magazine.

Stella is unhappy in her current role. She has always dreamed of being a fashion designer but has become complacent in her own life due to a fear of failure and the pressure of others’ expectations. Stella mostly conforms to the expectations of her family: “An Alonso didn’t suffer from anxiety attacks or spend their nights worrying about every little thing that could go wrong the next day. An Alonso didn’t seek therapy or air their dirty laundry to a stranger. An Alonso was supposed to be perfect” (6). The anaphora “[a]n Alonso” mirrors the experience of anxious fixation, as well as her family repeating their expectations to her. Due to fear of her parents’ worsened disapproval and the potential failure of taking a risk at an unstable career prospect, Stella has remained stagnant and unfulfilled for years.
